It is impossible not to mention the marvellous work of Oksana Volkova in the role of Matryosha: despite the compactness of the vocal part, the singer turns this small role into her own benefit with her artistic charisma alone. Incredible in its power of mastery!

Semperoper Dresden - Verdi - Aida - Amneris

Of the three protagonists, Belarusian Oksana Volkova (Amneris) made the greatest impression. The dark hues of her mellow mezzo never lost resonance and her recitative opening Act 4 radiated a splendid mix of passion and internal torment. The duet between Francesco Meli’s Radamès and Volkova, also in Act 4, expressing their conflicting love interests, conveyed some of the most beautiful moments of this performance.

Intriganten Charme verkörperte Oksana Volkova, deren Prinzessin Eboli als einzige der Figuren nicht am Rande des Wahnsinns schrammte, sondern dem höfischen Zeremoniell jugendliche Frische und Lebenslust verlieh. So versprühte die Schleierarie dann auch viel Esprit; ihren dunkel schimmernden Mezzo konnte sie naturgemäß später bei „O don fatale“ noch effektvoller einsetzen. Diese Chance packte Volkova dann auch beim Schopf und sorgte mit voller Tiefe, strahlenden Spitzentönen und pointierter Attacke für euphorischen Szenenapplaus.
