Reviews & Press

Meyerbeer - Les Huguenots

Concert with Oldenburgisches Staatstheater

Nationaltheater Mannheim - Bellini - Norma

First Kapellmeister Janis Liepins was in top form that evening. Not only is every note is planned,  he lets the orchestra flourish and at the same time tames it into reluctance to give the soloists their space.

Nationaltheater Mannheim - Mozart - Die Zauberflöte

Latvian Jānis Liepiņš, director of the National Theater Orchestra, brilliantly implemented  the arrangement. The orchestra under Liepin’s direction succeeded in  presenting a condensate that captured Mozart's cultural and religious struggle of contemporary Vienna in the late 18th century. The complex themes appear clearly and structurally pointed when they pass, without losing the character and the magic theater.

Moscow Opera Art Festival - Puccini - La Rondine

An important reason why everything sounded so good was definitely Janis Liepins. He conducted La Rondine in a very academic, flowing and precise manner. He did not miss any of the small details and didn't let even the most unknown elements of the whole piece drift on their own. The result did not disappoint - the performance was impressive, beautiful and it let the singers show themselves and their talent as well as their capabilities to full extent.

Latvian National Opera - J. Strauss - Die Fledermaus

The work of conductor Janis Liepins pleased immediately beginning with the overture. This chrestomatic Johann Strauss music has many hidden surprises and difficulties. The conductor has found the right balance of the tempo and character because of his recent experience as the principal conductor of ballet Raymonda. Janis Liepins feels the rhythm and tempo of this music very well and he doesn’t let the orchestra drift on their own.

Latvian National Opera - Stravinsky - The Rake's Progress

It's an intense musical delight to experience Jānis Liepiņš intricate and committed reading of the score and enjoy the ability of the orchestra to embrace less familiar repertoire. The performance of the soloists is top-notch and highly engaged in the ensemble.
