Nationaltheater Mannheim presents its latest production of Ariadne auf Naxos. The harmonious symphony led by conductor Jānis Liepiņš draws from the rich tapestry of Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal's intellectual operatic adventure. Liepiņš's masterful baton orchestrates an immersive experience that has captivated audiences and critics alike.

Bernd Künzig of SWR Kultur extols the production's "sonorous opulence," attributing its immersive quality to Liepiņš's adept direction of the chamber orchestra. Künzig notes the exquisite interplay of instruments, from the exotic tones of the harmonium to the soothing murmurs of the harps, which transport audiences into the heart of the performance.

Uschi Reifenberg praises Liepiņš's ability to evoke "Strauss sound of the highest quality" with a modest 35-piece orchestra. Under Liepiņš's guidance, the ensemble achieves a delicate balance between transparency and expressive depth, painting a vivid sonic landscape that enhances the operatic narrative.

Despite the acoustical challenges of the venue, Sven Scherz-Schade of Oper! commends Liepiņš and the orchestra for their ability to overcome such obstacles, creating a "delicate and audible volume of sound." Particularly notable is their mastery in accompanying the intricate vocal passages, responding with precision and nuance to the fast-paced recitative sections.

Judith von Sternburg of Frankfurter Rundschau highlights Liepiņš's skill in capturing the essence of Strauss's transparent sound, further cementing his reputation as a maestro of orchestral interpretation.

Liepiņš's work in Ariadne auf Naxos is a must-see for opera lovers and music enthusiasts. Catch his performances until May 12th at the Nationaltheater Mannheim.
