Master stage director Andrea Moses is one of European theater’s most celebrated and influential artists. With a strong focus on contemporary opera, world premieres, interdisciplinary formats, and the core repertory works, she creates productions on the highest artistic level for institutions such as the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Wiener Staatsoper, Salzburger Mozartwochen, and Staatsschauspiel and Semperoper Dresden. Leadership positions have included Artistic Director and Opera Director of Deutsche Nationaltheater Weimar, as well as Chef Stage Director at Staatsoper Stuttgart and Anhaltisches Theater Dessau. Upcoming highlights include New Productions for Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Semperoper Dresden, and Royal Swedish Opera Stockholm.
She and her team have been awarded the Prize of the German Theatre Publishers (2024), the Meininger Theaterfreunde Fellowship, (2008), twice been nominated for the German Theater Prize DER FAUST, and she regularly serves on the juries of RING AWARD, Götz-Friedrich-Preis, Akademie Musiktheater, and other industry-leading foundations. Teaching has been a part of her practice since 2004, including at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin and the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts Berlin. Leadership positions have included service as Artistic Director, Opera Director, and Chef Stage Director at Deutsche Nationaltheater Weimar, Staatsoper Stuttgart, and Anhaltisches Theater Dessau. She has been a freelance artist since 2025.
A German theatre and opera director, she has been shaping the artistic profile of the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar since 2021 as Opera Director and Resident Director, with a strong focus on contemporary opera, world premieres, and interdisciplinary formats. Her work is marked by a clear artistic vision, dramaturgical precision, and a deep commitment to developing new forms of music theatre.
Together with Michael Höppner, Andrea Moses co-founded the contemporary music festival Passion: SPIEL in collaboration with the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar and initiated the DNT Music Theatre Youth Club, further expanding the dialogue between opera, education, and contemporary performance. In 2024, she and her team were awarded the Prize of the German Theatre Publishers for their outstanding commitment to contemporary music theatre and new dramatic writing.
Recent and upcoming productions include Aida, Der Silbersee, La traviata, and Brundibár at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar; world premieres such as Welcome to Paradise Lost and Missing in Cantu; as well as Angels in America at Theater Bremen. Her future engagements include Don Giovanni and La Cenerentola at the Staatsoper Stuttgart and Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin in 2026.
