Die große Bühne gehörte indes dem mexikanischen Solisten Alejandro Del Angel, seit dieser Spielzeit Mitglied im Essener Opernensemble. Mit seinem durchschlagskräftigen, schmelzenden Tenor, dessen baritonale Färbung an seinen väterlichen Kollegen Placido Domingo erinnert, wusste er das Publikum zunehmend zu vereinnahmen. Erst recht, als es am Schluss mit „,O Sole Mio“ und „Funiculì, Funiculà" niemanden mehr auf den Stühlen hielt.
