And full throttle was – for now – quite literally life-saving in Timur Zangiev’s passionate conducting. The 30-year-old Russian drove the Staatsoper orchestra to peak performance with theatrical gestures: the strings by turns lush and wiry; the winds powerful to brutal.
...he leads the Vienna State Opera orchestra with confident gestures, allowing them to take their time and unfold a noble, darkly flowing sound.
In the pit came another distinguished debut, the trump card in the pack. Timur Zangiev, barely 30, has made a name for himself as a protégé of Valery Gergiev, particularly in Russian opera. He conducted a rip-roaring account of Tchaikovsky’s fate-filled score [...]
The 30-year-old Russian Timur Zangiev makes his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival, and it is a magnificent one.
Sergei Prokofiev's first opera “The Gambler” has its premiere here on Monday evening, and Zangiev bores into the piece until he finds the cornerstones between which it is stretched: here garish, loud tones, an unstoppable motoric and a cool continuous parlando; there moments of standstill and a highly emotional, intimate chamber play. The conductor fills the space in between with the finest nuances and dynamic gradations as well as delicate tonal shadings.
...we can now hear a very convincing mixture of soft Viennese sound and Timur Zangiev's tight, orderly, pointed and altogether extremely assured conducting. The 30-year-old Russian Salzburg debutant is currently much in demand internationally. And rightly so, as it turns out.
The conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic is no self-actualizer, no young genius with poses for the gallery, but a craftsman. He keeps the motor skills of the score running, its sucking circles, without overheating the music. Neon colors, bizarreness, bitingly nasty details, the simultaneity of completely different musical aggregate states - you can hear all of that. But Zangiev has understood: Prokofiev needs no coaching, no artificial exaggeration, but a pilot who organizes, weighs up and fits it all in. This conducting is captivating because it is so adept and takes the often stubborn Philharmoniker on a journey through music that is rarely performed. Timur Zangiev is a name to remember.
The accents, somewhere lyrical, somewhere angry, were brightly and correctly placed by conductor Timur Zangiev, and helped the action without drowning out a single director's note.
Conductor Timur Zangiev and the orchestra under his direction were a separate, special joy. Amazing, thorough, emotional work
It is important that there were no rude denominations that kill the epic flow of the musical stream: grandeur and coloristic beauty, measure and harmony in the sound of the orchestra (under the baton of Timur Zangiev)…
