Marcela Rahal is about to make her debut at the world-renowned Teatro alla Scala, performing as La Baronessa di Champigny in Il Cappello di Paglia di Firenze. This moment is a dream come true for Marcela, who has already gained recognition with major roles at the Luzerner Theater and by winning First Prize at the Concurso Tenor Viñas 2024. In this interview, Marcela shares her thoughts on this exciting milestone, the challenges she's faced, and her hopes for the future.

Congratulations on your upcoming debut at Teatro alla Scala! What does this milestone mean to you, and how does it feel to be performing at such an iconic venue?

Thank you so much! This is truly a dream come true. Among all the dreams I've cherished, singing at La Scala always seemed one of the most challenging and unlikely, especially given my reality as a Brazilian singer. Yet, there was always a part of me — almost an innocent, childlike belief — that knew this day would come. And here I am, living it!

Standing on this historic stage, I can't help but feel deeply moved, reflecting on the countless extraordinary artists who have graced it before me and the timeless music that has resonated across the world. Every moment here fills me with immense joy, and I look forward to many more opportunities to sing on this remarkable stage in the future.

Winning the First Prize at the Concurso Tenor Viñas 2024 is a significant achievement. How has this recognition influenced your career, and what advice would you give to young singers aspiring to achieve similar success?

Winning the First Prize at the Concurso Tenor Viñas 2024 was a pivotal moment that transformed the trajectory of my career. It was during this period that I started my partnership with TACT and my dear agent, Sofia Rukina.
To those aspiring to pursue a career in opera, my most valuable advice is to embrace your passion, discipline, resilience, and unwavering belief in yourself.

Let your passion for music shine through every note you sing. Remember, when you’re performing, those listening want to experience your voice. People can feel it when you are singing because you love it. They seek to be moved, surprised, and inspired. More importantly, they want to hear you—to connect with the distinctive qualities that make your voice and artistry one of a kind.

Despite the obstacles you may face, it is crucial to remain focused, practical, and strategic. Work diligently on your voice and repertoire, honing your skills to highlight your unique strengths.

The transition from smaller venues to one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses can be daunting. How are you managing the pressures and expectations that come with such a significant step in your career?

I'll be honest — sometimes it’s a bit overwhelming to reflect on just how much my life has changed in the past year. But in those moments, I find grounding in what remains constant: my love for singing and my passion for being on stage.
When nerves start to creep in and the pressure mounts, I remind myself that at my core, I’m still the same Marcela. My focus remains on what has always driven me — giving my best to my audience, forging a deep connection with them through the music, and cherishing every moment I have the privilege to perform and to live my dream.

Looking ahead, are there any dream roles or specific composers you’re eager to explore in the future? How do you envision your artistic journey evolving after this debut?

for composers and dream roles, I must admit that while it may sound cliché, it’s completely true — I am deeply eager to play my beloved Carmen very soon!!
Additionally, I’m absolutely captivated by Italian, French and German Romantic Era in music.
As an example, I can mention Massenet's work. His music is extraordinary, and I’m fortunate that his operas offer such rich roles for a Mezzo-soprano like myself.

As for how I envision my Artistic journey from now on, I have high expectations for what lies ahead — I'm someone who tends to think a lot, constantly analysing and dreaming a lot haha. But in all seriousness, I believe this will be a pivotal moment, marking the beginning of an exciting new phase in my life, filled with incredible opportunities. I've been waiting a long time for this, and I’m determined to make every moment count.
