Biography highlights

Nadezhda Karyazina is gaining recognition as a leading mezzo-soprano in theaters throughout Europe and the United States. Born in Moscow, Karyazina began her studies at the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center, where she performed such roles as Siebel inFaust, Olga in Eugene Onegin, Laura in Iolanta, Contessa di Ceprano in Rigoletto and Dunyasha in The Tsar’s Bride. In 2015, she became a member of the ensemble at Staatsoper Hamburg. Her engagements there for the 2016/17 season include Mercédès in Carmen, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Emilia in Otello, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Kontschakowna in Prince Igor, Pauline in Pique Dame, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro and Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte. In February of 2017, the mezzo will make her debut as the title role in Carmenat Festival Opera in New Zealand.

 

In the 2015/16 season, Nadezhda Karyazina appeared in Hamburg as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Mercédès in Carmen, Olga inEugene Onegin, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel and the Third Maid in Elektra. Karyazina was a member of the Royal Opera’s Jette Parker Young Artist Programme from 2013 to 2015, during which time she sang the roles of Maddalena, Mercédès, Rosette in Manon, Voice of an unborn Child in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Flora Bervoix in La traviata, Madrigal Singer inManon Lescaut, Léonor in La Favorite and Second Lady. In the 2012/13 season, she sang Charlotte in Werther and Polinesso inAriodante at the Salzburger Landestheater.

 

In 2012, Karyazina collaborated with Semyon Skigin in a critically acclaimed concert performance of Shostakovich’s song cycleJewish Folk Poetry at the International Performing Arts Center in Moscow. She also made her debut with the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma as the Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte and with the Latvian National Theatre as Olga. These successes led to a personal offer by Maestro Plácido Domingo to sing concerts in Beijing and Hungary, as well as to perform alongside himself and legendary tenor Jose Carreras in the “Christmas in Moscow Concert” at the Catherdral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.

 

As a member of the Young Artist Program at the Bolshoi Theatre, Karyazina sang Dunyasha in The Tsar’s Bride, Princess Clarice inThe Love for Three Oranges, the Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte and the Fortune Teller in The Fiery Angel. She gave her debut performance at the Bolshoi as Petrovna in The Tsar’s Bride, conducted by Vasily Sinaisky.

 

Also active on the concert stage, Karyazina has sung the role of Marquise Melibea in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims and Anna in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow with the Moscow Soloists Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of Yuri Bashmet. She has also sung the mezzo-soprano solo in Schumann’s Spanische Liebeslieder at the International Performing Arts Center in Moscow, as well as Mozart’s Requiem at the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater and Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. Most recently, Karyazina sang Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle at De Doelen in Rotterdam, De Falla’s El amor brujo at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder at the Linbury Theatre in London.

 

In 2014, Nadezhda Karyazina was named “Best Young Artist” at the Österreichische Musiktheaterpreis in Austria, and in 2012 she was awarded Second Prize at the II International Singing Competition in Savonlinna and Third Prize at Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition. In 2011, she was a finalist at the Neue Stimmen International Voice Competition in Gutersloh, Germany, receiving the honor of appearing at the XXV Neue Stimmen Aniversary Concert with some of opera’s biggest stars.

The best singing of the evening came from Andrea Mastroni as Sparafucile and Nadezhda Karyazina as his strumpet sister. Currently engaged for comprimario roles in Hamburg, the Russian born mezzo with a rich plummy timbre has an impressive future. “De’ scudi già dieci” was a surprising musical high-point of the performance.

Hamburgische Staatsoper - Ensemble concert

Sie hat ein atemberaubend ergreifendes Timbre im tieferen Register, das einen erschauern lassen kann. Und eine genauso umwerfende Brillanz und Strahlkraft in der Höhe. Dieser wunderbaren, energiereichen und bewegenden Sängerin gehört die Zukunft – möge sie sorgsam mit ihrem Kapital umgehen. Es wäre der Hamburgischen Staatsoper zu wünschen, dass sie diese außerordentlich begabte Mezzosopranistin noch ein paar Jahre halten kann.Ja, diese 30 Jahre alte Russin vermag mit ihrer Stimme mühelos und makellos das Haus zu füllen. Ihre Koloraturen waren von himmlischer Schönheit. Jeder Ton saß bombensicher. Sie war die einzige Frau an diesem Abend, von der man sagen kann, sie habe wahrhaft europäisches Format und vermöge auch in den ganz großen Häusern wie Wien, Paris, London, München, Berlin und Mailand zu begeistern.

Hamburgische Staatsoper - Verdi - Messa da Requiem

Der Löwenanteil von Erfolg und Applaus galt  jedoch zu recht den beiden Damen. Nadezhda Karyazina besticht nicht allein durch eine fast exotische Bühnenpräsenz, doch in erster Linie dadurch, dass ihre darstellerische Ausdruckskraft perfekt auch in der Modulationfähgkeit ihres warmen wohltönenden Mezzos, zeigt. Sie gibt sich der Rolle mit allen ihren Gefühlen und ihrem ganzen Können hin. Sie entzückt in der Anfangsszene durch ihre Verspieltheit, beeindruckt, wenn sie in ca. 3 Meter Höhe an Lederriemen vom hölzernen Bühnenelement hängend, von Leid und Tod singt, bewegt bis ins Innere in der letzten Szene, wenn sie gegen die Vergeblichkeit einer ewigen Last kämpft.

Mezzosopranistin Nadezhda Karyazina als Kontschakowna. Sie sang mit einer durchdringenden, wunderschönen Klangfarbe, sehr sinnlich und sehr intensiv. Karyzina has a dark, incisive mezzo with a plush, velvety lower register that is beguiling. She has impressed in La traviata (quite the best Flora I’ve seen for years) and the recent Manon Lescaut (the madrigal singer) and I’ve no doubt she’ll develop into an Eboli to be reckoned with.
