Biography highlights

Born in Hamburg, Johannes Stermann has studied at Hamburger Knabenchor St. Nikolai (Prof. Wilfried Jochens), High School of Music and Theater, Munich (Prof. Fenna Kügel-Seifried, Tobias Truniger, Christian Gerhaher, Donald Sulzen, and Norberth Groh), and graduated at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Munich. He participated in master classes with Brian Zeger, Margot Garrett (Juilliard School, New York), Rudolf Piernay (Guildhall School, London), and Marjana Lipovsek and Alfred Burgstaller (Sommerakademie Mozarteum Salzburg).


Johannes Stermann was awarded the 1st prize at Jugend musiziert competition (2002) and won a young opera singer's scholarship for his performance of Eremiten in Weber’s Der Freischütz during Festivalsommer at Chamber Opera Schloss Rheinsberg (2007).


His operatic debut was as Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Augsburger Musikhochschule, 2005). He performed Geronimo in Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto (Kammeroper, München), Company Commander and Zaretsky in Eugene Onegin, Arkel in Les impressions de Pelléas, Bartolo and Antonio in Le nozze di Figaro (Bayerische Theaterakademie and Prinzregententheater, München), Commendatore in Don Giovanni and Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail (both during Mozart Festival, Bad Reichenhaller Philharmonie), Mr. Olsen in Kurt Weill's Street Scene (Prinzregententheater, München), Hermit in Weber's Der Freischütz (Bergwaldbühne Wolfratshausen), Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte (National Theatre Taipei, Taiwan and Opéra de Lyon), Der König in Ernst Toch's The Princess and the Pea (Dresden).


Starting from the 2012/13 season, Johannes Stermann is part of the ensemble of Theater Magdeburg. 


Other appearances include the bass part in Mendelssohn Bartholdy`s Der 95 Psalm (concert with Augsburger Symphonie, Bayreuth), his debut as König Marke in Tristan und Isolde, Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Der Großinquisitor in Don Carlos, Der Onkel Bonze in Madama Butterfly, Theseus in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Banco in Macbeth, Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia, his role debut as Heinrich der Vogler in Lohengrin, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte (all in Magdeburg), his debut at the Salzburg Summer Festival in Braunfels` Jeanne D’Arc as well as Cuno in Weber’s Der Freischütz (Limoges), Obrist in Die Soldaten (Teatro alla Scala Milano) and Tom in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera with Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (Tel-Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa).


Upcoming engagements include Baculus in Der Wildschütz and Verdi’s Requiem both in Magdeburg, and Bach’s Magnificat with Israel Philharmonic Orchestra among others.
